About the Malawian Women
The Mpumulo Women's Center has 3 main areas of work: health, education, and income generation. On December 12, 2011 we started our literacy program. We will be working with 10 women enrolled in this class. The income generation component will start with jewelry making in January 2012, other projects will be added soon. We are raising funds to build a health clinic. "Mpumulo" means "rest" in Chichewa, thus our center is a "place of rest" for women living with gender-based violence and HIV.
The Malawi Women's Health Education project is currently in place through a partnership with Edgewood College (Madison, Wisconsin) and Soche Baptist Church in Blantyre. Nursing professors and students from Edgewood College School of Nursing offer weekly classes using Skype to support group members from Soche Baptist.
The Men Against Gender-Based Violence group is currently working in a rural village outside of Kasungu to provide education and other services with the goal of ending gender-based violence in their communities.
