Malawi has some of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world and nearly 1 in 5 Malawians are HIV positive. The average life expectancy for Malawian women is 51 years. This is a serious health crisis that cannot be ignored. MWH is improving women’s access to health education and healthcare services by building a health clinic, bringing health providers to more remote communities, training lay health educators, providing medical supplies and equipment, and expanding medical transportation options.

Health
Malawi has some of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world and nearly 1 in 5 Malawians are HIV positive. The average life expectancy for Malawian women is 51 years. This is a serious health crisis that cannot be ignored. MWH is improving women’s access to health education and healthcare services by building a health clinic, bringing health providers to more remote communities, training lay health educators, providing medical supplies and equipment, and expanding medical transportation options.
Education
Malawian women have limited access to education, with many who are unable to read, write or do basic arithmetic. The lack of these fundamental skills interferes with women’s ability to get the information they need to make important decisions, to advocate and negotiate for themselves and their families, and find gainful employment. MWH is working to provide women with basic language and math literacy skills by providing a teacher, classroom space, and needed supplies.
Income Generation
Malawian women, like women all over the globe, need to earn money to pay for housing, food, clothing, transportation, healthcare, and education. Many Malawian women struggle to find employment. Many wake up each morning not knowing whether they will have food for themselves or their children. MWH is working to help women develop opportunities to generate income by supporting microenterprises that sell goods and services in both the local economy and in other countries.
